In October 2007 the Irish Times published an article alleging that a counsellor at Roebuck Counselling Centre had asked one of her clients for €100,000 in return for “business advice”.
Over the next week, in further articles in the Irish Times and on National Radio, it emerged that a number of people had been persuaded to give large amounts of money to Roebuck Counselling Centre. The largest known amount of money at that time was
€235,000. We now know that clients were pressurised to hand over amounts greatly in excess of this.
As a result of the extensive publicity that arose from these revelations a group of people came together to exchange their views, stories and experiences of their time in Roebuck.
A decision was made to set up a website.
The main purpose of this website is to provide a forum for people who feel they have been exploited, financially emotionally or mentally, by Roebuck Counselling Centre, its staff or any other counselling professional.
The second purpose is to join with and work with other pressure groups concerned with the lack of regulation and enforcement of proper standards in the counselling fields.
We will be holding public conferences, workshops and meetings on various issues of concern in particular how to recognise and deal with financial and emotional exploitation. These will be open to both clients and practitioners where together we can pursue a mutual goal of improving understanding of the counselling relationship and what constitutes good ethical practice.
